Good Karma, I suppose
I had an appointment today at noon, to do some research for a column I’m writing. The appointment (which I’ll tell more about later, after I’ve transcribed an hour-long conversation) was enlightening, and I felt pretty good after leaving the office.
I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do with the rest of my afternoon – there are a few things that I need to work on:
- I need to re-read my screenplay and start the first edit.
- I need to re-read my business plan and start the first edit.
- I need to sew the curtains for the bedroom I said I’d sew a month ago.
- I need to sew the pillow cases I said I’d sew three months ago.
- I really want to make a skirt out of these jeans that are far too big for me.
- I need to return a video that is far overdue.
- I need to take out the trash and tidy the house.
Instead, I meandered down to Granville island slowly, texting with Adrian the whole way. Just at the bottom of the hill, where 2nd ave meets whatever road goes into granville island (is that Old Bridge St.?) I had stopped to text because walking and texting sometimes makes me fall down.
There I was approached by three 18-20 year old asian girls, asking “Excuse me? Can you help us?”
“Sure. What can I help with?”
“We’re trying to find….May…nards…Out-let on West 2nd.” She points at a datebook that just has a name and a number, no address. “We’ve walked all along 2nd avenue and can’t find it?” (I love how people make statements that sound like questions.)
“Well, let’s see if Google knows.” They wait patiently, thanking me repeatedly as I text Google the name and the city and hope for a response.
(Side note: Text Google (it’s free, except for however much your texts cost) at 46645. Quite often they’re helpful, sometimes, not so much. But dood. It’s google. From your cell phone. There’s no complaining about that.)
Google had no idea, unfortunately. Likely because all I could offer was “maynards outlet, vancouver, bc” which doesn’t always bring any clues, even online. So I called the number she had in the book. Thankfully, it was the right number and I was able to get the address and directions for the girls (who had been joined by six other friends).
I wrote down the information, and asked about their visit. Turns out they’re here direct from China and are only visiting for fifteen days – until the day after tomorrow. So fun!
“Glad you came for a visit, and I hope your trip turns out to be a fun one! Glad I could help! ” I said, thinking what a lucky thing it was I came along at the time.
They all thanked me again, and again, and pressed a small red package in my hand. “It’s a gift, for your help” they said and waved as they walked away. I was so surprised I almost forgot to say thanks – only the last couple of people actually heard me.
When I got to Pedro’s Coffee House on Granville Island I opened it up. It’s a brightly coloured lovely pure silk scarf. Crazy! I got a gorgeous new scarf in return for being as nice as I normally am.
Sure makes a person feel good.

Me, but not of some screaming, squalling kid. No, I’ve officially registered the first draft of my screenplay, “You and Me” at the Writers Guild of America (west) dot Org.
Do you have ANY idea what this means?
It means I’ve finally gotten over my fear of actually accomplishing something, for one. And another thing it means is that I’ve accomplished one of three things I planned To Do In 2007. Pretty cool.
It’s currently under review by one person. If you’re interested, let me know. I might be willing to let a couple more people read it for me. Then I need to figure out what I’m going to do with it. There might be a chance of getting it in front of someone – a producer who is meeting with a friend of mine in a few weeks. Crossing my fingers.

things are starting to take off. I’ve got a lot of great things to talk about, but I’m so overwhelmed (not really overwhelmed, but there is no such thing as merely ‘whelmed’ is there?) that I don’t know where to start.
I have, however, made the decision that this blog is going to be revamped a little. With the assistance of Thomas, The Most Fabulous Webdesigner Ever, the blog is going to undergo some aesthetic changes: skinned to match Tokitikki Design. At the same time, I’m looking forward to maintaining the blog on a more regular basis, but only in a few choice ways.
As has been suggested, I’m planning to “consolidate my online identity” – by that I mean that anything published under my name or under tokitikki design will be about me, jewelry, art, cuisine or culture. That said, I’m not planning to be less funny, believe me. I’ll still be publishing my every-other-month columns at Intrepid Media, and you’ll still see my recipes and accompanying pictures. I’m still writing about my designs and about any restaurants that suck or rock. I may even have some themed Friday Fives, and maybe some of you lurkers will come out of the woodwork to participate! (I know you’re there, I have tracking, dears!)
Above all, I’m really grateful that I’m able to participate so fully in such a rich environment – friends, family and my own personal goals included. Please continue to come along for the ride, and I promise to make it worth your while!
