clean slate

There’s a reunion coming up, and I’m really excited.

Lesley is coming to visit. Thebuttermint will soon descend into (onto?) Vancouver and take it by storm. Partly by herself, unfortunately, since I can’t manage to get the 1st (hello, rent day) off. But, it should be a pretty darn good time.

She arrives tomorrow evening, and after a short nap, she’ll join us for Adrian’s (slightly sucky) 35th birthday dinner of steaks on the barbie. I say slightly sucky because with funds being slightly short this year, he didn’t get much of a party, and he didn’t get much in the way of presents. Or presence, as the case may be, since we haven’t heard from anyone else, either. So, his ‘Oh my god, I’m halfway to middle-aged’ birthday will be celebrated quietly, with only a little bit of nudity.

He did, however, get a nice hour-long back massage (a professional one!) – I traded some babysitting for some massage therapy and voila – birthday! He’s also getting a delicious cake from Cupcakes on Denman. $30 for a 7 inch cake and I’ve never tasted money better spent. Our wedding cake better be just as damn good in Charlotte!

Friday night, I think Lesley and I will go out alone, maybe hit a gay bar (since I haven’t seen the inside of Celebrities yet) and have some wining, dining and dancing all by ourselves. Saturday night will be a gathering of friends. If you’d like to come, invite yourself to show up at our place around 7pm ish. Give us time to wash the work day off and freshen up. Bring refreshments or booze, either one will be delightful! Me, I’m voting for tequila. It’s been a long time since this girl had a margarita and it’s a damn good weekend for it!

Sunday I think we’re planning to hit up Granville Island, when there are lots of vendors about. Monday, not sure yet. She leaves at about 1 or 2 on Tuesday, so we’ve got quite a bit of time to do fun stuff. Any suggestions?

I’m going to get in the shower now, but seriously – Saturday night, 7pm. Feel free to pop by.

sunburned but happy

Today and yesterday, Adrian and I headed out to the beach to sit under the giant sculpture of engagement rings and try to sell my jewelry and some greeting cards we made out of adrian’s photos.  On Thursday, I sold five pairs of earrings I recently made to Erin (have I mentioned Erin on here yet?  If not, she rocks.) for herself and her sister.  I’ve been on a jewelry making frenzy lately, and those earrings (as well as quite a few other items) turned out super-duper well.

Between selling those earrings to her and selling some items at the beach, in the last three days I’ve made $160 from selling jewelry.  As it turns out, the bracelets I hate (hate! can’t wait to get rid of them!) – they were the first things to sell!  Apparently, I have bad taste in my own jewelry.  On the bright side, I know what to make more of and who to sell them to.  Fancy chandelier earrings go for the 20′s crowd.  Women 30 and over dig chunky necklaces and funky charm-ish bracelets.

I was really, really excited to finally sell off some of my pieces.  I JUST put in an order for about $170 of more stuff (spending as fast as I make it, you see), and I’m thrilled with some of my new ideas.  Oh man – I rock at this design stuff.  If only I could get some kind of grant or loan – with $500 to $1000 to spend on ‘ingredients’, I could repay it with interest and still make enough to maintain my own business.

I know I’m good.  It’s the one thing I’m truly confident about – I know what the eff I’m doing, ya heard?  ha!  I heard too many times in the last few days how awesome my pieces are and how they can’t wait to show their sister/aunt/mother/cousin/etc.  *sigh*  You can believe a star will be wearing my earrings at an awards show some day.  Not some sucky B-movie star either.  A REAL ONE!

I have a horrible, terrible, icky farmers tan though – mostly one arm and part of my chest.  the part that wasn’t covered by my funky necklace.  I’m hoping slathering the rest of me with sunless tanner (Arbonne, baby!) will even it out.

Also as it turns out – yoga before bedtime is relaxing.  mmmmmm.

and starring Maigen Thomas…

The jewelry isn’t showing up currently because I’m waiting for my friend Thomas (not the cat, the one I went to college with) to finish designing my site and get it up and running. I need to show off some of the new jewelry I’ve done! There are a few pieces currently showing on ebay

On another note, I’ve got another something to share with you all, and I’ve got to admit – I’m super excited about it!

While I was in North Carolina staying with my family for a month and a half, I got to see some of my old friends, including my favourite hairdresser, Pam, and my ex-recruiter-turned-bestest-girlfriend, Kim. When Kim and I first met, she was interviewing me for a temporary position she had available – and I can’t remember if I got the job, but I knew I had made an instant friend.

Since then, we’ve stayed in touch quite well, for people who both have lives (her: new baby; me: new husband to be and life in Canadia-land). Kim came over to my grandparents house one evening in April and said “I HAVE to share this with you, because you won’t believe how awesome it is!” and asked me to stick my hand out. She squirted some face wash on it. “It’s just soap” I said. “I use Dove soap every day and I love it. Why change?”

Because it’s awesome soap. I’ve been using the Arbonne Nutrimin C line for about two months now. I hate to admit it, but the product does exactly what I hoped it wouldn’t do – it made my skin fabulous. I say that I hate to admit that it did what it said it would do, because that means I was WRONG. I hate being wrong.

What really struck me about the company and the individual products is the commitment to being botanically based. Each product has a list of ingredients that anyone can read and understand. There are explanations about each ingredient – where it came from and what it’s for. I especially appreciate that – I’m trying to be as healthy as possible. Putting whale blubber on my skin doesn’t make me feel very healthy.

The products cover everyone ‘from basket to casket’ as someone saucily remarked. There’s an anti-aging line (the NutriminC products), a men’s line (NutriMENC), the everyday-anybody-all skin types ‘Intelligence’ line, an anti-acne line (Clear Advantage) and… ta da! A baby line, appropriately called the Arbonne Baby Care (ABC).

Adrian has tried (and loved) the men’s line, and I’m addicted to the yummy feeling my skin gets when I use the anti-aging line – it’s never too early!

I realize it’s a network marketing company, and what I get out of it is what I put into it. My goal (at this time) isn’t to make a billion dollars and corral all my friends and family into selling this stuff to everyone they know. I don’t know that I’ll ever get higher than consultant, because I have so many other goals to push forward that are really important to me.

However, that doesn’t mean I got into being a consultant lightly. I’m sincerely thrilled about the products and knowing that *I* am that excited it makes me want to tell everyone I know about them. As picky as I am about my skin care, I know that I can share Arbonne with everyone – with confidence.

With that said, I’m not going to be a big pusher on the website. It’ll come up every now and then, when I’m running promotions and give-aways (they give me some free products, after all!). If you’re interested in a sample, let me know.

Oh, and when you’re at our apartment, don’t forget to try the sea salt scrub! It’s delicious!
