i said I’d blog

May 31st, 2005

…but what I really meant was that I’d blog when I really felt like it, and I’m only doing so now so people stop wondering if I’m still stuck in the airport or not.

I’m here, dur. And it feels like no time has passed at all, and yet too much time has passed. We have to take the ferry back to Vancouver the day after tomorrow, and I really, really don’t want to. But I can only wear the same clothes for so long before someone starts to notice and make comments.

There is much cuteness that needs to be blogged, but as soon as I start writing about it I read it from someone else’s perspective and think “Gag me! Could you guys be any more nauseating!” So I delete, delete, delete back to the beginning.

A quick summary of events: Friday night we stayed in Vancouver, since my flight came in so late. I tried Canadian beer, as well as 15/16. It turns out 15/16 tastes like Miller Lite (ish) to me. Yum. I can so handle that.

Saturday we brunched with Cara and Ingo – “So you’re from North Carolina, isn’t that below South Carolina?” “Not usually, no.” – dining al fresco at Malone’s (it is such a really cool feeling seeing the ocean practically everywhere you go on either the island or the mainland) – and Cara was very excited (obviously) to get First Meet, and it was a nice segue from alone time to ‘meet the friends’ time, which I was actually pretty nervous about. Meeting Cara and Ingo helped me relax a bit – and while Ingo headed to work, and Adrian went to buy cds, Cara took me on a quick tour of Stanley Park, which was hugely enjoyable both in views and conversation. “See how you’re turning left and I’m going straight? Yeah. I have the right of way…”

We finally caught the ferry at 5:00, and ended up on the island and Adrian’s apartment around 7:30 ish? We got ready and headed to Grant’s birthday party (somehow managing to wear matching colors completely by accident, although I’m not sure anyone noticed). I was nervous again (hellooo, more meeting of friends), but being greeted with shots and an invitation to ‘catch up’ kind of breaks the ice. I got to play bartender, briefly, as well as meeting and subsequently adoring every last one of his friends. (Smootchies, I’m SO keeping you all. There is no escape now. Mwuauhahahaha!)

We made it home sometime in the wee hours of the morning, after I feel asleep on the couch, which of course was after we made it to some club and back again. The rest of Sunday was spent napping spontaneously in between bouts of cuddling separated by moments of rest. Then we had a date (our first official date) for the “Night of Improv” with some of the cast of “Whose line is it anyway?” I had never, ever seen improv up close and in person – and that’s just what I got. We were front row and on the aisle, which means that even though I forgot my glasses I still could barely see. The highlight (or lowlight, if you look at it from my mortified point of view) was that we got called up on stage to participate in an Improvisational Game. I’m not good on stage, and even less so when I’m put on the spot for SOUND EFFECTS…

Monday morning – I must have asked the right question during breakfast: “Do you want to watch Indiana Jones?” “YUS!” Eventually, though, we left the apartment for a very long walk around the island. I have no idea where, because I was smiling more than I was looking around, no idea why…

Dinner last night was at Moxie’s, and the wine was fabulous. Caliterre – Chilean Merlot. Someone remind me I need to find more of that. There is more to come, but I’m already sad that my official first visit here is half over. But it’s been beautiful so far. And I know it will be even more beautiful in the future.

here’s to flying…

May 27th, 2005

The countdown has begun. In less than 37 minutes I’ll be on my way to the airport. I have my “I swear to god I was born here so let me the fuck back in” papers, I have my clothes (although even with help I had no clue what I’d need. Galoshes, yes or no?), I have my books, including one romance novel that will hopefull take my mind off of flying and I can dogear the pages as needed…

I’m leavin’ on a jet plane…and my family and friends and co-workers threaten pain of death if I finish the lyrics to that song. My mother and best friend threatened mischiff with pain of death if I neglected to return as well.

I’m so very, very excited about going to Canada. Canadia! I’ve never SEEN the pacific ocean. Never smelled the…whatever is in it. Maybe it’s cleaner than the atlantic, but not likely. I’m excited to meet all his friends *waves*

I want to just be there and get it over with so I can de-stress, have a beer and say “whew. so that’s what it’s all cracked up to be?” I tend to work myself into anxiety attacks, but I’m going to refrain from doing so now. Suffice it to say I’m excited. Super-excited. And I’ll blog you all along when I can.

*kisses*
