Eat, Pray, Spend.

My new column is up over at Intrepid Media about the new genre of Priv-Lit and how to be happy without spending a fortune.

It’s almost as if the recession ended and no one told me (or gave me a raise). For some, spending a fortune on taking a vacation is the point rather than a means to an end (the experience). It’s just another form of elitism. Even in these economic times, I read in a Gallup poll done in May of this year, Americans report that they are expecting to vacation less this year, but intend to spend more on transportation and other holiday and leisure costs.”

This is all I need to see on my birthday.

I just found this video.  It was filmed immediately after Spain’s World Cup win against the Netherlands (who I was pulling for, until the game got so flipping exciting, I just couldn’t stop cheering for *anyone* who was shooting for a goal!).  Iker Casillas, goalkeeper for Spain, just made some of the most amazing saves I’ve ever seen.  His girlfriend, Sara Carbonero, is a reporter and she’s trying to keep it all professional and interview him.

And he’s like “…no,  no…I have more important things.”

And I LOVE IT!

Iker Casillas after the win

I got to spend a really awesome layover watching the World Cup with my friend Justin and friends of his in Georgetown, Guyana – this huge room of people staring at a projected game on the wall, everyone cheering or groaning every time a goal attempt was made.  I loved the experience, and I’m looking forward to wherever I’ll be for the next World Cup!

what we’re watching

April 1st, 2009

If you’re anything like me, you watch a bit of tv.  You generally don’t seek it out, except in specific circumstances, but if something happens to catch your eye,  you’ll chill out and watch for a bit.

The exception for me, lately, seems to be a show I got into two years ago – a show, I have to admit, Adrian had to DRAG me into watching.  He was into Prison Break and Heroes and I was…watching Sex and the City reruns and a gazillion movies while he was at work.  Convincing me to watch Heroes might have been the awesomest thing he ever did.

I find myself these days WAITING IMPATIENTLY for new episodes to air – yet I’ve never once watched it on network television.  (Mostly because I can’t stand commercials.) Each episode I’ve watched this season has been with a good friend who has netflix (I LOVE netflix now, by the way.  I’m nearly ready to buy stock!), and as soon as each episode is over, we go out for a cigarette and discuss the details excitedly!

I’m GAGGING to find out what happens, but I’m sadder with each new episode because it means we’re that much closer to the season being over and that long, interminable wait between the cliff-hanger (’cause you know there’ll be one) at the end of this season and the explosive season premier in a few months.

I’m madly in smit with Sylar and his dark nature and I’d like to know what the hell he’s up to, breaking into Danko’s house yet NOT KILLING HIM.  Granted, Sylar is out for Sylar and Danko wasn’t interfering with Sylar’s plans at all, so…no reason to kill him.  Yes?  But why the bunny? Why make a gift of Doyle?

The look on Sylar’s face at the end of ‘Shades of Gray’ was one of: “I own you, and you don’t even know it.”  Utterly chilling.

My other two favourite characters are HRG/Noah Bennett and Angela Petrelli.  Angela because I just love having a strong female character to identify with (there’s a column in there somewhere), and Noah because that guy just plays his cards so close to his chest and plays each side of the fence like he’s got no ties to either side.

I love it.

I can’t wait to watch “Into Asylum” here in a few minutes.
